What brought you from California to New York?

I moved to NYC to work in independent film, then went on to do just about every job imaginable in film, music, and design. I'm happiest when combining all three.

What is the motivating factor that drives you to create?

Imagination. Nothing compares to the feeling of translating an imagined idea into the real world. Also teamwork. I love working with other creative people to make things that one person alone could never accomplish.

What kinds of things inspire you?

I'm inspired by things that seem simple, but require a lot of effort to create. Once you experience them, you have no choice but to see –or hear– the world differently.

What does design mean to you?

Design is the practice of seeking elegant solutions to meaningful questions.

What are your favorite parts of the production process?

I really enjoy all parts of the process. These days I focus on the beginning to make sure that the best team is in place, asking challenging questions and setting big goals. The hardest part is balancing a grand vision with attention to detail – both are equally important but require very different mindsets.

What are some books / blogs / publications that inspire you?

I listen to a lot of podcasts to learn and stay inspired. The big ones, like Radiolab, 99% Invisible, Design Matters, The Moth, and Song Exploder never fail me. I actively listen to about 15 design pods, but also really love industry insights from other aspects of business like WSJ Media Mix, IDEO Futures, Freakonomics, Revisionist History, Harvard Business Review's Cold Call, and NPR's From Scratch. If I had to pick one lesser-known pod to recommend, it would have to be BBC Radio 4's Soul Music, which tells the personal stories of people deeply affected by a single song – it makes me cry nearly every time I listen.

How about inspiring musicians and artists?

Daft Punk, Prince, M83, James Blake, My Bloody Valentine, The Clash, Quincy Jones, Mandrill, Psychedelic Furs, Chromatics, Alan Braxe, Apparat, Chateau Marmont, The Chemical Brothers, Claude Debussy, Giorgio Moroder, Vangelis, Depeche Mode, Dustin O'Halloran, Brian Eno, Hollie Cook, Jamie XX, Kishi Bashi, Lindstrøm, Rone, Funkadelic, Röyksopp, Say Lou Lou, Yumi Zouma, Sebastien Tellier, Son Lux, Steve Moore, Stevie Wonder, Tame Impala, Twin Shadow, Justice, The War On Drugs, Warpaint, Woodkid... This list could go forever. I'll stop there. I don't even know where to begin in art or fashion.

What do you like to do outside of work?

Watch TV, experience art, travel, make music...not necessarily in that order.

Do you have any passion projects?

I'm a founding board member of the Museum of Music and Entertainment in New York City (MOMENT NYC), which is a remarkable non-profit initiative to build a dedicated music museum and education center in Manhattan, organized for the purpose of creating a comprehensive history of New York City music and supporting its vibrant music communities. I'm actively looking for more collaborators on the project at all levels, so I welcome anyone who is passionate about music to check out our temporary website while we prepare the new digital portal to the museum and education programs.
